SWIM FARTHER AND FASTER WITH MAXIMUM EFFICIENCY

So you can swim, and have no problems with water survival. Somehow, you still find something lacking in your swim strokes, but can't really put a finger to it. Or perhaps you've noticed yourself (or observed other swimmers) with the following during swimming:

  • tires easily, although you know you can do more?
  • rapid hands and legs movements, but only covers a short distance?
  • over-taken by other swimmers with seemingly much less effort
  • breathless after a few short laps
  • struggles to balance between staying afloat and moving forward

If you've experienced any of the above, then you're most probably not executing your swim strokes correctly. Regardless of what swim strokes you are executing, the following are basic best practices for you to follow.

YOUR BODY POSITION

This affects the whole stroke, so get it right first of all. Aim to stay as streamlined as you possibly can. A dropped torso is a sign of incorrect body position.

YOUR BREATHING

Many stroke problems come from breathing at the wrong time. Focus on not letting your breathing interrupt the leg and arm action.

YOUR LEG ACTION

This helps to hold your body in a good position. Strong, consistent and steady kicks are necessary to stay as horizontal as possible.

YOUR ARM ACTION

In all strokes (except breaststroke), most of the power comes from your arms, but they can only work properly if your body position is right.

TIMING OF YOUR STROKE

This is the way all the stages fit together to form the complete stroke. Using a float to practice part of a stroke can help.

FOCUS ON TECHNIQUES FIRST

Don't try to swim too fast, too soon. Get your stroke right first, only then improve your distance and speed. With the right stroke techniques, you can achieve faster timings and greater distances.
